See trip here -- website (thelongwayhome.us)
25,000 miles 1 year, 3 kids 1997 Landcruiser 80 petrol 4.5L v6 automatic with '82 Toyota Pickup converted expedition trailer
Twitter (https://twitter.com/ourlongwayhome): (still posting as in Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/thelallyslongwayhome) (wife mostly posts once she gets some more time after kids found a school - Athenry?)

Arriving back in Ireland in next few weeks (family arrived in Galway 2 wks ago to sort out schools, housing etc) and currently trying to arrange shipping (container into Dublin/Cork or RORO via UK/Antwerp.

Can post up pics of truck + trailer +mods and lots of 'travel' photos etc..

However need HELP WITH INSURANCE and not sure where to post this.

My wife just got a quote from AXA Ireland and nearly US$11,000 with 3k in road rax, penalty for LHD, ditto for LPG which also needs an engineers report, emissions or engine size penalty, import tax ...
Our old insurance in Scotland (was 12 yrs) ago was GB P400 for nearly same truck - that was a 96 model 80 (w/ LPG) and this one is a
1997 with LPG conversion (done in Peru but BRC Italian 5th gen), and other 4x4 ad-ons (bullars, winch, RTT, drawers etc.)

Wondering what the state of play is in IRL for these trucks and are they heavily penalised.
If so then may have to "live" in UK and drive back-n-forth somehow -- anyone done this?
Whats the cost on road tax (and is it based on year of truck, size of engine, emissions etc.)
What other taxes?
Whats NCT costs roughly? - presume I'll need to get one done and then is it every yr thereafter or ..)

Are there many 80 owners in IRL (West/Galway based?)- presume most are diesel.
Anyone know of folks that returned back to IRL from US with truck etc.. (we didn't have to pay any import taxes in UK when we moved there yrs ago from US and truck was fine as long as didn't sell within a yr and deemed to be personal property)

Any car insurance companies you can recommend? (online).
Whats average price for insurance? (does it vary by area, mods, 'history' etc.)

Any advice appreicated?

Thanks
Brendan

I don't know what to say about insurance but $11k is crazy. I'm on log and have a few mods but I was never asked by my insurance so I never declared them. I have heard that insurance should not increase for log but I suspect otherwise. Axa are usually reasonable but try a broker also.
Tax is €1800 and the way round that is to commercialise it, if you require 5 seats then it can be declared as a crew cab, tax is then €333. There are some legal issues about this but it is common practice here. NCT will be required every year, or CVRT if its commercial. NCT is €56 and Cvrt is €111.

s a guide my insurance is under €400.

Its expensive to run these trucks here so doing everything by the book may not be not be possible

Niall - thanks for that

Looking at the online VRT calc (https://www.ros.ie/evrt-enquiry/vrtenquiry.html) mine seems to come in at €2271 - does that seem right?

5722

Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) it indicates at €6308. Is this a right 'valuation' for selling a petrol 1997 model wuth 296K miles? or substantially less

Is VFT the "road tax". You indicate €1800 so thats close to the €2271- is diesel taxed less?

Looking at the Revenue website I should be able to "import" the car ok and not pay import duties as a returning immigrant with possessions as long as don't sell within the yr (same as UK). Presume I don't have to pay VAT as not 'bought'

Don't understand the ...I'm on log... did you mean ..mods...

If I convert it to a 'commerical' -- what do I need to do? - take out middle seats (rears already gone as have drawers in there)
other stuff?

Got some brokers I can contact (as I don't know of any)

You should be vat exempt, vrt will be due. The cost can be reduced by putting it through as commercial or crew cab. I paid 1300€ on mine 9 years ago as a passenger vehicle, same model as yours but 95.

By log, I meant to type LPG, I'm only on a phone so there will be plenty of mistakes.

Try insure my van for commercial, or cover in a click for passenger.

Th crew cab, remove rear most seats and belts, fill bolt holes and tint the rear windows. Full commercial will also require the same procedure on the middle row.

Your right Rocky, vrt exempt if a change of residence is involved. Strange as its a tax for registration not importation.

Happy to do a "presentation" at some stage in the future... for photos & FAQ on the trip at some club meetup

I would be interest in that, especially with the length of time it took.
Just have to sort out a club meet. Or we could just continue the wild atlantic way, north Mayo to south Galway?
