Hi All,
Yes I know....... another newbie with a mission. Joined the forum to pick your minds dry as I am looking to buy a 80 series Landcruiser Amazon diesel 24v turbo with manual box and hopefully a crewcab.
Dont have a Tradein as just sold my G wagen after 6 1/2 happy years of ownership. Things change with time and so the quest is on for one of these machines. Any and all help offered would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Mike

Hi Nailer,
Well lets just say its not the first time I've been told what I was looking for was as scarce as hens teeth. I believe it was 7 yrs ago when I went looking for the G wagen I was told the same thing by the boys in the GWOA.co.uk
Eventually went on to fullfill my mission. Which is the one I sold recently by the way.
Someone told me there was 300 odd crewcabs registered in Ireland of various years old. They can't all be gone for export?
Regards,
Mike

gday Mike last time i looked -July 2010- i seen a 80 series just outside Milton Malbay. I first spotted it a year prior in the same place. Plenty of crew cab Hiluxs in Ireland, haven't seen a crew cab landcruiser here yet.

Would be interested to know where outside Milltown on what road?
I am back there this evening and could confirm its foothold on a piece of ground.
When I said crewcab I ment LWB Amazon with a permanent division between the front two rows of seating and the rear cargo area whilst contained within the vehicles body. Used in delivering workers to onsite jobs and collecting same while also allowing for the delivery of goods and materials in a safe manner.
Now have you seen any?

Mike

hi mike u wont find a crew cab in a 80series,crew cab,s in the landcruiser range was mainly in the 100series and mainly in 03,then customs (vrt) people click on to what was going on and put a stop to it,but it still can be done u pay the vrt and keep the com tax,but in order for a crew cab to be done right a section of the frame had to be cut out and the box thats but in for extra room to up make the space gets a fair doing from the ground if use in building sites or fram work ,theres a few of them around north cork all in 03 auto 100series,cruiserdave

Hi Mike
Was down through Galway and Clare 2 weeks ago and seen 2 100s with the back partitioned of in the back to make a crewcab, I have been thinking about about buying a 80 for a long time (want 24v) and converting it to a crewcab, rang the customs, guy told me the cargo space must be 2/3 the wheel base and a steel partition with four strenghters diagonally and horizontally welded in to the bodywork. The only problem now is the Gardaí have cracked down on commercial vehicles in Donegal so I could still end up paying the full road tax on it if i was stop out of work hours.

Well here we are in the County Clare and its along long way from here to there. Just a update on progress to date..............none...........yep.............. scarce as hens teeth.............found a few 91 farmer hacks suitable only for housin hens.
Nothin in a 80 series of any kind in the last 2 months in Ireland.
Have been lookin across the water, tried a private sale on fleabay but it went far higher than I was prepared to go for it as it needed some expensive work.
Two UK garages carry a wide variety of models but the word on the UK cruiser forum is not to touch them with a barge pole as they are not considered reputable and trustworthy. Anyone over here buy from them and like to offer a little advise.
The search goes on!

Well Dave, I think your right. Her indoors and I have committed to doing Jonathan Croziers 4x4 Charity Challenge again this year in aid of Temple street Childrens Hospital. Previous years we'd do it in the G wagen and upset all the Landy heads slaggin them about fast oil changes in a Landy are only possible 'cause there ain't much left to change usually. Its all a bit of banter and fun over the weekend and almost nobody takes it too seriously.
This year G wagen sold and no 4x4 road legal vehicle at home. Gettin nervous as its on 1st of October might have to do event with two bicycles tied together.
Tonite saw a 80 on D Deal in LMK, on the blower, off to look, not bad, gearbox issues, high mileage alot of bits u/neath to be replaced, great bodywork and no rust u/neath AND cheap at 2500e. Came home went to show the wife and there is another one in Cork, so yes they must come in three's or sometin. Plus there was another one in Wicklow somewhere.
Thanks for the info on the Crew cab requirements, so it can still be done on an Amazon, good to hear.
Regards,
Mike

He was none too happy with me when I told him I wasn't goin to buy it.
But as you mention that guy in Wicklow. I found his number and yes he had it sold to a pair of Asian guys and when they came back to collect it and pay it was redo the deal all over again so he cleared them. Rang him this morning to see if he still had it, yes, so organised a lift to Mondello (driftin weekend) met up with the seller Paddy and we had a look......a sound honest 80 series......no picture of health and beauty mindyou and you wouldn't want to be a cleaness freak either but the basics were all there or worn out but visible, oh and 100000mls less than Lmk and also commercial from private.
Deal Done......... and drove home............can still be on the lookout for the keeper but in the meantime will have some fun with this one.
Anything wrong with a set of pollybushes and an +2" ironman kit and damper oh and a set of tyres, should start the ball rollin what do you think. It needs a rad too before long an autobox rad.
Everything comes to he who waits.
Regards and thanks,
Mike

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the purchase. Yes I do plan to investigate the change over to a crewcab. It was a better buy than the one in LMK but I needed to see that one before I realised it. Saw this morning Lmk one sold and off to Poland.
There will be nothing left here fore a finish.
Where is a good place/places to go for parts for a 80 series like general stuff.
Oh and on the price, well its very public on here so lets just say it was between limericks price of 2250 and Wicklows asking price of 3500.
Regards,
Mike

Thank you.
Theres alot of work to be done with it before the Challenge weekend on the first weekend of October. Some being cosmetic the rest being usual worn out stuff due to age and mileage. For a small investment in parts and labour a guy should have a trouble free truck for a long time.
I think thats whats now drivin the prices through the roof in the UK for good ones. Reputation has them going on forever.

Mike

I thought every story had a happy ending like in the movies........
Just home from competing in the 2011 4x4 challenge for charity in aid ofTemple Street Childrens hospital.
We finished all work on "Amanda" at 19;05 of friday evening with everything we set out to do done.
Took her out of the garage, out of the forecourt, onto the local road, out behind a lorry, up to the first road junction, braked.........nothing happened pedal felt like it was to the floor and the ABS was working overtime and all from about 10mph....... BANG up the ar£e of the truck.
Was such an impact noticable.... no...... off he drove into the distance totally and blissfully unaware of what happened behind him.
The chrome bullbar hit the rib of the taillift on the truck. Bullbar bent back and broke the head lights, bent the bonnet.......... so things not lookin good for ath challlenge at the time.
Rang Jonathan the organiser and told him of our plight he suggested bring something else....so we brought my work van a 2wd Volkswagen combi T5 2005. Away we went.
The rest as they say is history.
After an exceptional performance by both my wife and I we managed to come in 1st place on day 1 of the event and finished a glorious 3rd place overall.
Not bad for a 2wd vehicle in the compamy of supposodly superior 4wd vehicles..
Might use a 4x4 fiat panda next year.
Regards,
Mike
PS any spare 94 Amazon headlights on the go toa good home

hows the 80 going mike?

G'day all,
Well to answer in reverse order. No I don't have eyes in the back of my head but I was drivin that bit more cautiously as I was after all reduced to doing the 4x4 challenge in a VW T5 2 wheel drive van. Thanks of course to permission from the organisers and their help in avoiding bits of the routes that were just not possible in a van.
We done well didn't we, and surprised a few others by coming 3rd overall for the whole event.........shhh........best keep that bit quiet.
So, why did we end up doin it in a van.......thought you bought a Amazon for that very reason I hear you ask???............
Well let the buyer beware I remember from my schoolin days.............never a few truer words spoken and not in gest.
Had the 80 for a few weeks beforehand gettin to know it, what was and wasn't possible to do with it. What sounded right and what needed fixin all generally becomes apparent within a few weeks of takin ownership of a new pride and joy or even a project/wreck as the case may be.
So I had my list of jobs to get done before the off on the challenge.
Happily very few things needed doin except the mother and father of a complete servicin from top to bottom. Started to ammass all the parts required and started mid week to finish for Friday with a wash.
18:50hrs on friday evening reversed it off the lift, absolutely everythin done and then some. Drove out of the garage down the road, indicated left, let a truck pass, pulled out behind him, drove to the next T jct, he braked and slowed, I braked and felt like I went faster, stood down hard on the BIG brake pedal, to no avail, ABS pump sounded like it was workin o/time but not stoppin. Made light contact with the taillift of his truck. He didn't even feel it and drove off, never lookin back. I checked the damage out it was superficial. Back to the garage SLOWLY. Explained what happened. Replicated it, happened again in test conditions.
Fault in the ABS system, previous owner/owners disconnected the pump by pluggin out 2 plastic clips by the ABS block. I noticed them unplugged and reconnected them. Hence the evening before the challenge I needed 2x headlights, 2x sidelights, 1x grill and 1x bonnett. Damage made all the worse by having a chrome "bullbar" fitted. Would have gotten away with a broken grill without. Oh and yes it was taxed and in test. No new or s/h parts goin to be available at 9pm on a friday night.
Does that explain the van nearly winnin the 4x4 challenge.
Regardddddddddddddddddddddddssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssss,
