Hello everybody. Lenny from Clare here. I recently became the proud owner of a 1979 land cruiser bj41v. Needs a small bit of work. Hoping to get it into good to great condition for a daily driver. Already got some good tips from this forum on power steering and other things. Hoping to do all the work myself including paint. 954 Will appreciate all suggestions and helpful hints.

Hi Lenny,
Welcome. I also have a 41v, a 1980 reg. They are a rare beast, did you bring it in yourself?
Mine is in need of repair also but by the looks of things yours is in much better shape. Throw up a few photos when you get a chance. Enjoy the resto.

Ya I brought it in from Japan a couple of weeks ago. It was kind of a shot in the dark condition wise but its in good condition. Floor pans are rusted out especially the passenger side. I'm looking forward to getting working on it. One of my mates is restoring a bj45 and he found a great site www.megastore4x4.pt/. It has a couple of blemishes kinda worried about the rust on the inside up on the roof sills have never had one of these apart so dont know what to expect.

Welcome to the forum Lenny, the bj looks to be in good condition.
Will you need to replace the floor pans?

Yes floor pans are badly needed accidentally stuck my finger through the passenger side one (think it might have been a drain hole though.) passenger side very bad drivers side not so much but still needs replacing. Few other small bits too rear quarter panel driver side. No goin to replace the whole thing I'm goin to patch it as it's only a small bit. Also need a rear tyre carrier and suspension bushes replaced and a new set of body mounts and that's it. ( I hope) for a couple of years.

Have rust in all the places you mention. I dont mind doing any kinda of work, but i'm in a real dilemma wheather to bite the bullet and take the whole cab off ...... cos that can only lead to one thing and thats doing the whole chassic .....
So I think I'll try get someone to cut out and patch the rust

Hi Lenny,
Welcome and has already been said "nice truck", well wear and good luck with the work. You have to ask tho', if there is that little rust, wouldn't you be better replacing the pan while you can get the panels and be finished for good? Just a thought.

I'm replacing both floor pans and only patching the rear quarter panels as they aren't too bad. Don't think I made that clear in my post. Won't be starting until may or June though. Going to order parts gradually and then lift off the body do the work and finish in a 6 week window. Well that's the plan anyway.

Wecome Lenny, Happy motoring and good luck with restoration. I had a BJ40 that I rebuilt back in '92. after about 5 years the rust reappered between spot welds where back wheel arches meet outer rear panel. I recently did some paint work on my 1986 BJ74 and used Rust-bullit paint and 3M seam sealer on areas prone to spray of dirt and crap from tyers and road, back wheel arches up under rear coners and chassie from front wheels back. Seems to holding up ok. Good looking BJ.

I have been torn between rust bullit or por 15. Have been hearing good things about both but if you have first hand experience with rust bullit I might consider that. The under body of this seems to have a thick coat of some kind of rubber it seems to be doing the job in most places. And the front arches were replaced for fibre glass ones. Thanks for the advice hoping to get started soon there are a couple of rust spots on the back door sills need lead filling soon.
